Now in Catalonia (and for long), we had to try one of their typical event: the Calçotada.
On March 15th we had a calçotada at home with Aurélie and Joan, chef for the occasion. Besides, who’s better than a real catalan to discover this dish? For those who don’t know it (most of you I guess actually), this is a purely catalan dish made of calçots (very very sweet onions, they look like leeks) cooked right on top of the embers until they turn black and a special sauce for calçots. As you can see on the penultimate photo, in addition to calçots, they put bread directly on top of the embers as well (to make the famous “pa amb tomàquet“) and meat (we bought sausages just for him 😉 ).
Regarding on how to eat it, you have to remove the first carbonised layer of the calçot then dunk it into the sauce, and what a treat! 😀 Fifteen calçots per person and a good wine to go with it, this dish exudes summer! (even though this is celebrated only the first 3 months of the year, March being the most suitable in general)
Once is not custom, I would like to really thank Joan and Aurélie for this meal and their company. We had an amazing time with you guys, let’s do this again whenever you feel like it! 😉
